The WordPress foundation has Five for the Future, a program which encourages companies to commit 5% of time or resources to the WordPress project. Due to the small size of Anchor Hosting, full-time just myself, it’s easier to sponsor others then to regularly contribute myself. If your business looks similar to mine, consider sponsoring others. Here are a few ways I give back to the WordPress project and community.
Direct sponsors
Monthly meetups
Since 2017 we have been actively running the local WordPress meetups here in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Code contribution
Most contributions I’ve made have been to WP-CLI, as it’s something I primarily use. However on occasion I have made core contributions.
Theme and plugin support tickets
As of September 2024, I manage over 2000 WordPress website using other providers like Kinsta and Rocket.net. I run WordPress updates weekly for all customers and handle any maintenance related issues. This puts me in a unique place to uncover bugs, often before others encounter the same issue. Most months I’m helping document issues for theme and plugin authors as part of my normal update process. This helps out everyone running the similar WordPress sites.
Open source everything
Everything I code here at Anchor Hosting is freely available under the MIT license. See Anchor Development for a listing. Feel free to take anything I’ve made and do whatever you’d like with it.
